FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government’s actions in response to the 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods announced by United States President Donald Trump will begin at midnight.
"It is time for Canada to stand strong and united against the threat of tariffs," said Premier Susan Holt. “Team Canada is prepared to hit back with a forceful response, starting with a package of tariffs on over $155 billion worth of U.S. products."
Holt also announced actions the provincial government will be taking.
"Our team will use every tool in our toolbox to defend and support New Brunswickers and help end these tariffs," said Holt. "NB Liquor sells $40 million worth of American alcohol products in our stores. I have directed NB Liquor to cease purchasing U.S. alcohol and to remove their products from the shelves."
Holt has also directed the public service to complete a number of actions, including:
• Immediately review the government’s procurement and stop the signing of deals with United States companies, except for critical services for New Brunswickers that cannot be immediately replaced.
• Have Opportunities NB and the Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour finalize, in line with federal support, programs to support workers and entrepreneurs. Details are to be announced soon.
• Review internal trade barriers to strengthen the Canadian economy in collaboration with federal, provincial and territorial governments.
• Continue seeking other measures New Brunswick can take to protect its workers and economy.
"My number one priority is to protect New Brunswick workers and businesses,” said Holt. “It's more important than ever to build up our economy, buy Canadian, and come together to demonstrate the resilience of our people and our province.”
